Van-El was the son of Kal-El and Lyla Lerrol, in an imagined world where Krypton never exploded. His older sister was named Orna. They appeared in Superman Annual #11 "For the Man Who Has Everything" (1985).

Van-El appeared in Justice League Unlimited (2004) in an adaptation of this story. His mother was Loana, based on Lois Lane and Lana Lang. Orna did not appear in this version. For Superman, leaving his son was the hardest part of waking up from his dream.
